Turning a free, public award list into a BD gold mine
You know that awkward moment when you’re trying to message a new prospect…
And you’re staring at the screen thinking:
“What do I say to break the ice?” 🥶
It kind of feels like dating on OKCupid again, right? 😅 (or maybe that’s just me)
It’s always easier when you have a good opener.
So recently, I started using a new technique:
Using public award lists as warm openers. 💡
You know the ones - “Fastest Growing Startups,” “Top Employer,” “Best Culture,” etc.
They’re everywhere. And they’re perfect.
Why?
Because they give you a real reason to reach out that doesn’t feel cold.
Example:
“Hi [Name] – congrats on the Forbes award! You’re in great company, and I’m sure it’s well deserved. I’ve been following your content and love how you put culture first in everything your team shares.”
Simple. Warm. Natural.
And best of all?
Repeatable.
So here’s the exact process I used - and how you can do it too:
Step 1: Pick an award list
I started with the Forbes Best Startup Employers list.
It includes 500 startups, many of whom are great prospects. 💪🏻
The website isn’t super copy/paste-friendly, but I estimate would take me about 30 minutes to turn it into a spreadsheet using my best Excel moves.
That said, my go-to is using a Fiverr agent to save time🧑🏻💻
My go-to person quoted me $25 and a 2-day turnaround. Totally worth it.
Step 2: Filter the list to fit your niche
I cut out industries that aren’t relevant to my work (e.g., biotech, energy, real estate, etc.).
That left me with 356 companies in sectors I do recruit for.
Step 3: Enrich the data
This part is gold - and where the real value starts.
My goal:
Identify the companies with 11–200 employees
Find LinkedIn profiles for the CEOs, founders, and senior marketing/product leaders
I tested a few different tools for this:
LinkedIn Recruiter/Sales Navigator: Great for identifying senior leaders but loading large number of companies into the company field is time consuming and hard to automate accurately.
OpenAI’s Deep Research & Perplexity:
Perplexity gave me advice, not data. Disappointing.
OpenAI: It worked really well but I ran out of credits at 200 rows even using the $200/month Pro plan. Frustrating!
Clay.com was the winner - fast, clean, scalable, and accurate. 🎯
There’s a bit of a learning curve for using Clay but I think it’s totally worth the investment (see video below).
The Result?

Feeling stuck with LinkedIn content? This helped me…
When I first started posting on LinkedIn, I was very hesitant.
I would hover over the “submit post” button asking myself:
“Is this what I’m supposed to post?” 🙈
“Will anyone care?” 🙉
“Will I look stupid?” 🙊
And the results were inconsistent.
Some likes. A few comments.
But not from hiring managers.
And I kept second-guessing everything I created.
One of the investments that help me unlock my hesitation was Clark Willcox’s Digital Recruiter program.
It gave me structure.
And the confidence to post without second guessing.
Now I write with intention - and it leads to better conversations.
I’m getting noticed by hiring teams and my ICP (CEO/founders of startups).
And my outreach is getting a lot more traction!
Starting next week (April 21-25) Clark is running his 5-day live bootcamp again.
If you want help dialing in your messaging, your content, and your outbound effectiveness - this is a great opportunity.
Plus, you get a full year of access to all his training.
